Press Release: Is txtspk accepted in business with the evolution of language?

Is txtspk accepted in business as language evolves?

At a time when David Cameron has received criticism for misuse of text acronym, LOL, the spotlight has been on the changing face of the English language, given the global impact of SMS.

The SMS format imposes restrictions on content, forcing the user to adapt language and edit to ensure brevity.

This growing culture of abbreviation has been observed by global SMS aggregator, Avetio. The company has witnessed significant use of text speak by businesses when dealing with opt-out requests, using phrases such as ‘2opt out’ or ‘2stop rply’ or even ‘stopavetio’.

This ‘normalisation’ of text as it creeps into daily communications is evident in exam papers, CVs and increasingly apparent in the workplace. The acronym FYI, which was formerly the realm of hacker slang and noticeboards, is now widely accepted in the context of business.

Commenting on the use of text abbreviation, Asha Lad, director of Avetio, said: “The inclusion of acronyms like OMG, LOL and FYI are now recognised in the Oxford English Dictionary, which is an indication of their acceptance in everyday language.

“We’re certainly seeing increasing evidence of text speak in client communications, suggesting a shift in formality in language. It was born out of utility and though it can be criticised as colloquial, it can certainly add context and an indication of tone.”

Where emails can sometimes be misinterpreted, the addition of emoticons or hashtags in social media give an indication of irony or humour, which can soften communications and make them less likely to be misconstrued.

Lad added: “Those who are fully conversant with the internet and social media make up an increasing percentage of the workforce, so there is no surprise that language is evolving as a result. Striking a balance is important so mutual understanding is achieved to bridge the gap between generations. ”

Press Release: More savings for mobile roaming services including cheaper data downloads

EUROPEAN COMMISSION
PRESS RELEASE
32 Smith Square, London SW1P 3EU - http://ec.europa.eu/uk

ISEC/21/2012
10 May 2012

More savings for mobile roaming services including cheaper data downloads
From this summer, holidaymakers and business travellers will begin to see significant savings if they use maps, emails, social networks and other data downloads abroad.  From 1 July 2012 the European Union's mobile roaming regulation will be extended to include price caps for data downloads resulting in the cost of downloading data or browsing the internet being capped at 70 cents per megabyte, plus VAT.  This is six times lower than 2009 prices.

"Bill shocks" should become a thing of the past for anyone travelling outside the EU.  Also from 1 July this year consumers will get a warning text message, email or pop-up window when they are nearing 50 euro of data downloads, or their pre-agreed level.  They will then have to confirm they are happy to go above this level to continue data roaming.  Currently this alert system is only operational within the EU.

From 1 July 2014 customers will have the option to shop around for a separate mobile roaming provider, either through a contract or by choosing a provider at their destination - like they would choose a wifi network - whilst keeping the same number.

Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said: "By putting price caps on data we have created a roaming market for the smart phone generation. More than that, we have ended the rip-offs familiar to anyone who has used a mobile phone while travelling abroad. I am pleased that year after year the European Union is putting money back in the pockets of citizens."

"From 2014 we are also delivering a permanent solution to the roaming issue, something better than any price cap. We are bringing full competition to this market by making it easy to choose a separate roaming provider. If you can find a better offer compared to your standard contract you'll be able to do it in a few simple swipes, just like when you choose a wifi network."

From summer 2012: data downloads get much cheaper
Since 2007 the EU has placed price caps on calling and texting. Now data is being brought under the same system.

The new prices caps which enter into force on 1 July 2012 are:
  • 29 cents per minute to make a call, plus VAT
  • 8 cents per minute to receive a call, plus VAT
  • 9 cents to send a text message, plus VAT
  • 70 cents per megabyte (MB) to download data or browse the Internet whilst travelling abroad (charged per Kilobyte used), plus VAT.

Downloading data previously cost more than 4 euro per megabyte from many operators in July 2009 – those prices will be cut by around six times.

By 2014, as prices are cut further, the maximum cost of downloading data will be just 20 cents per megabyte, plus VAT, a saving of 90% on many current rates.

Operators are free to offer cheaper rates. Price caps are a maximum level, acting as a safeguard, and competition should drive them lower.

From 2014: competition will deliver cheaper roaming
Enabling customers to the option to shop around for a separate mobile roaming provider will provide an incentive for mobile network operators in countries visited to offer services at rates close to national prices, on the basis of their own low national network costs.

As people's mobile data use intensifies and they want to use their devices anywhere at any time, many travellers are likely to find the wifi-like option very attractive.  These forces will reinforce each other to create lower prices and better network coverage.

Price caps will stay in place until 30 June 2017 as an extra safety net for consumers.

Background
In recent years consumers have benefitted from EU action to create a strong safety net of price caps and guarantees against "bill shocks" and more competition which drives the market to cut prices further.

The latest Commission proposals have moved from draft to implementation in record time of less than one year (see IP/11/835).

Compared to 2007 prices,  the improved EU roaming regulation – taking into account calls, SMS and data - will deliver consumers savings of 75% across a range of mobile roaming services.

This year Europeans will spend around €5 billion on roaming services, a saving of around €15 billion compared to what the same services would have cost under 2007 prices.

Easy and Instant Sharing

The Samsung GALAXY S III is more than a personal device that can be enjoyed by one user - it wants you to share and experience smartphone benefits with family and friends, regardless of where you are. With the new ‘S Beam,’ the GALAXY S III expands upon Android™ Beam™, allowing a 1GB movie file to be shared within three minutes and a 10MB music file within two seconds by simply touching another GALAXY S III phone, even without a Wi-Fi or cellular signal. The ‘Buddy photo share’ function also allows photos to be easily and simultaneously shared with all your friends pictured in an image directly from the camera or the photo gallery.

With ‘AllShare Cast’, users can wirelessly connect their GALAXY S III to their television to immediately transfer smartphone content onto a larger display. ‘AllShare Play’ can be also used to instantly share any forms of files between GALAXY S III and your tablet, PC, and televisions regardless of the distance between the devices. Under AllShare Play is also the ‘Group Cast’ feature that allows you to share your screen among multiple friends on the same Wi-Fi network; you can make comments and draw changes at the same time with your co-workers, witnessing real-time sharing on your individual device.

Human-centric Design with Uncompromised Performance

The GALAXY S III not only presents features with enhanced usability, but also provides an ergonomic and comfortable experience through its human-centric design. Its comfortable grip, gentle curves, and organic form deliver a rich human-centric feel and design. Inspired by nature, its design concept is the flow and movement of nature. The elements of wind, water and light are all evoked in the physical construct of the GALAXY S III. In its essence, the minimal organic design identity is reflected in the smooth and non-linear lines of the device. Available in Pebble Blue and Marble White at launch, Samsung will introduce a variety of additional color options.

With a 4.8” HD Super AMOLED display, the GALAXY S III offers a large and vivid viewing experience. Samsung Mobile’s heritage Super AMOLED display even enhances to HD and 16:9 wider viewing angles. To ensure faster content sharing and connectivity, the GALAXY S III offers Wi-Fi Channel Bonding which doubles the Wi-Fi bandwidth.

The GALAXY S III also sports a range of additional features that boost performance and the overall user experience in entirely new ways. It introduces ‘Pop up play,’ a feature that allows you to play a video anywhere on your screen while simultaneously running other tasks, eliminating the need to close and restart videos when checking new emails or surfing the Web. Its 8MP camera features a zero-lag shutter speed that lets you capture moving objects easily without delay – the image you see is the picture you take. With the ‘Burst shot’ function that instantly captures twenty continuous shots, and the ‘Best photo’ feature that selects the best of eight photographs for you, the GALAXY S III ensures users a more enhanced and memorable camera experience. HD video can be recorded even with the 1.9MP front-facing camera, which you can use to capture a video of yourself. Improved backside illumination further helps to eliminate blur in photos that result from shaking, even under low lights.

Mobile payment is also accessible with the device through advanced Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The gaming experience is enhanced through ‘Game Hub,’ providing access to numerous social games, while Video Hub brings users high quality TV and movies. Furthermore, Samsung Music Hub will offer a personal music streaming service. Game Hub, Video Hub and Music Hub will be introduced in select countries initially and soon rolled out to global markets.

The Samsung GALAXY S III will be available from the end of May in Europe before rolling out to other markets globally.
